Reconciliation beyond a single week

While National Reconciliation Week is over, schools have an opportunityy to make reconciliation part of everyday school life beyond the annual week of recognition.

National Reconciliation Week is a significant event in the Australian calendar, held every year from 27 May to 3 June. Reconciliation Australia shared that “Reconciliation Week is framed by two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court’s 1992 Mabo decision, which recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived on and cared for this Country for tens of thousands of years.”

This week encourages all Australians to meaningfully engage with the shared histories, cultures and achievements
of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Equally, this week serves as a time to thoughtfully consider what each of our roles are in reconciliation. This idea is reflected in the 2026 theme for National Reconciliation Week, ‘All In’, which “reminds us that reconciliation is not passive and it is not the responsibility of First Nations people alone.”
