The research conducted by the Education Policy Institute (EPI) is on the impact of the Phonics Screening Check (PSC). It has used national census data for all children in year 1 in England and is of special relevance to Australian educators, who are now also implementing a Phonics Screening Check in Year 1.

The data ranges from 2009, before the Phonics Screening Check was introduced to 2018, when it was well-established. It looks at key stages of reading and writing results and at patterns of children who are recorded with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities.

The EPI report concludes that the implementation of the PSC has had no positive impact on “the reading levels of primary aged children in England.” The implications of the report are of vital importance for all Australian teachers to consider.
